Ocean robots that stay at sea for months
Online Oceans builds Scout, a 2.4 m solar-electric robot boat that collects ocean data for months at a time. No ship. No crew. One person launches it from a beach. Tether, our web platform, runs the fleet from any browser.
Survey companies, instrument makers and research programmes use Scout to watch the sea, listen for vessels and marine mammals, and measure waves and weather. We are a small, venture-backed team in Southampton, growing fast.
The job
Scout has ridden out Storm David on camera, held station for 40 days collecting wave and weather data, and tracked underwater vehicles for customers around England, Wales and Scotland. You will turn work like this into content that our buyers see and remember. You will plan what we publish and make most of it yourself: filming launches from the beach with the field team, cutting footage from Scout's onboard cameras, designing datasheets and event stands, and writing case studies with our engineers and customers. You will also keep the website current and track which content brings in enquiries.
What you will do
- Set the content plan and run the calendar across LinkedIn, the website, video and events.
- Go out with the field team to film and photograph launches, deployments and recoveries, including from a drone.
- Edit footage from Scout's onboard cameras and screen captures of Tether into short videos for LinkedIn and the website.
- Write case studies and posts with our engineers and customers, and take them through customer approval.
- Design datasheets, brochures, slides and event stands.
- Keep the website up to date with new case studies, products and roles.
- Track engagement and leads from each channel, and adjust the plan based on what works.
What you will bring
- 5+ years making marketing content, in-house or at an agency.
- A portfolio covering video, design and writing, sent with your CV.
- Strong video editing and graphic design skills, with your own command of the tools.
- The habit of asking engineers good questions, and the ability to explain technical work clearly to buyers who are not specialists.
- Comfort on and around boats, and the stamina for early starts and shoots in all weather.
- The organisation to run a content calendar on your own and hit dates.
Nice to have
- Drone flying, with a CAA qualification.
- Marketing to B2B technology, offshore or ocean science buyers.
- Shooting in wet or marine conditions, including with waterproof housings.
Why join
- Unusual footage You will film one-person beach launches and Scouts on station offshore, and cut onboard camera footage from storms such as Storm David.
- Real stories to tell Our case studies come from real missions, such as 40 days on station collecting metocean data and tracking an underwater vehicle down to 138 m, and you will find and write the next ones.
- You shape the brand We are a small team, so you will shape how Online Oceans comes across on LinkedIn, the website and at events, and your ideas reach publication quickly.
- Content that reaches buyers You will see which of your videos, posts and case studies lead to conversations with survey companies, offshore operators and research teams.
